Kent claim the double in 2022 leagues
Kent Target won both the overall league and the league according to club size in 2022, something they have not achieved since 2013 as a selection of smaller clubs kept them off the top spot in the points per player league over the last 9 years. The overall league victory was perhaps never in much doubt, Kent are really the only club in the UK who regularly win and achieve placings in all grades, though a number of other clubs have started to have more of an impact in recent years in different grades, as can be seen in the final league tables. Kent overall ranked up 793 points, compared with Arden’s 572 and Celyn’s 322 in second and third place respectively.
This year Kent were particularly powered to victory by their A grade team, who won five of the seven A grade competitions at tournaments in 2022. They only lost at the two tournaments following the National Championships, possibly due to them relaxing after securing their first Nationals A grade crown for six years. These wins and the second places they achieved at the two September tournaments gave them 165 points and a comfortable win in the A grade league.
They also did well at all the other grades, with 95 points in the B grade, though Bethersden Bulls ran them close with 85 points of their own, 80 points in the C grade (second to Arden’s 140 points), 95 in D grade (with Celyn in a close second on 88) and 122 in the E grade, where the only other club to socre points was Limemere with 58 points. Across the Junior grades they picked up 212 points, second to Arden’s 307 points but still a very decent total.
Arden relied more on their Junior teams and their C grade team to pick up points, though their A grade team scored a respectable 65 points which matched Highlanders total in that grade as they had a fairly lacklustre season by their standards, with just one win and two second places to their name. Celyn also did well in the Junior grades and also scored a lot of points in the D grade, while Bethersden Bulls (who finished fourth overall) scored well in both the B and C grades.
The lack of a strong seasons from the smaller clubs, such as Highlanders, meant the player points league was again a fight between Kent and Arden and it was again Kent who came out on top with 16.35 points per player, compared with Arden’s 13.67. Bethersden Bulls were in third with 8.29 points per players.
With new smaller clubs such as the Titans on the scene in 2023 and perhaps more competition at the A grade level generally Kent might struggle to defend the league according to club size. With so many players in their club they have to score a lot more points to outscore a small specialist club in this league. However, the overall league will be harder to wrest from their grasp, unless a number of clubs seriously deprive them of points at different grades through the season.
